ALIFE Japan

December 1, 2009

The ALIFE store in Japan. When looking pictures of this store I feel like the store is simple yet cool. On the outside the store gives a feeling of a vault or a aquarium where you look in and it’s open and uncluttered. The interior of the store is simple as well. The two chairs facing the shoe wall, the open space, simple organization, and the choice of hardwood floor make this store appealing.

The Burj Dubai is the tallest building in the world. 160 habitable floors, 2,684 feet tall (as we know of) because they kept increasing the height during construction. This monumental sized skyscraper is the centerpise of a mixed-use development that will include 30,000 homes, 9 hotels, 3 ha of parks, 19 residential towers, a man and a 12ha artificial lake. One of the many cool characteristics this skyscraper is the condensation collection. The hot and humid outside air, combined with the air con within the building will cause a lot of condensation. The water condensation will be collected through a piping system that will be pumped into the irrigation system and used for watering plants. The system will provide 15 million gallons of supplemental water.

The crazy thing … Ahu  Dhabi (the second largest city in the United Arab Emirates is considering making a 224 story building.

“I love L.A.”

Where to begin? The house itself is the longer structure with the shorter structure being its guest house. The house is situated on top of a hill overlooking hollywood and downtown L.A. This house was designed to be environmentally efficient, especially with cooling. Being situated on top of a hill direct sunlight will provide lots of natural light through the glass walls. However, the heat being generated was a concern. The architects used emitting composite lumber to repel heat. The valleys on either side of the house create airflow through the double sided hinged doors on either side of the house. Clean lines,  uninterrupted space, glass walls, and the outdoor projection movie theatre are the hallmarks to this house.

Melbourne Theatre Company

Melbourne Theatre Company.  When viewing the MTC from a right angle the neon steel tubes resembles three-demnisonal shapes. Since most events are at night they coloured the building black to really bring up the tubbing. This facade is supposed to represent and actor bringing life to a dark backdrop on a stage. Inside the building there are different theatres with their own themes.
